Discover the Finnish Alphabet—And What Makes It Special
The Finnish alphabet might look familiar, but it hides some special surprises. With only 29 letters and a few unique sounds, it’s one of the most organized alphabets for kids to learn!
Alphabet Basics
The Finnish alphabet includes the same 26 letters as English, plus three extra ones:
- å – used rarely, borrowed from Swedish
- ä – sounds like the “a” in “cat”
- ö – sounds like the “i” in “bird” (but rounder!)
It doesn’t use the letters q, w, x, z often—and “b,” “f,” and “g” are usually only in loanwords.
Alphabet Activities for Kids
Letter Match-Up
Print out Finnish letters and pictures of matching items (like aurinko for A – sun). Let your child match the sound and image.
Make Your Name in Finnish
Write your child’s name using Finnish letters and teach how each one sounds. Even names can feel new and exciting!
Dinolingo’s Finnish course (ages 2–14) helps kids get familiar with the alphabet through interactive games, animated videos, and printable worksheets. Children hear each letter in context and start connecting letters to real-life words.
The course also includes offline flashcards and drawing activities that encourage kids to practice Finnish letters at home making learning fun, easy, and screen-free when needed.
