How to Count to Ten in Cantonese (With Fun Tricks!)
Learning how to count is one of the first steps in any language and in Cantonese, it’s extra fun! With just a few words and helpful memory tricks, kids can go from one to ten in no time.
Let’s Count Together
Here are the Cantonese numbers from 1 to 10:
1 – yat (一)
2 – yi (二)
3 – saam (三)
4 – sei (四)
5 – ng (五)
6 – luk (六)
7 – chat (七)
8 – baat (八)
9 – gau (九)
10 – sap (十)
Each number has its own tone and sound, and with a little practice, kids can say them all clearly!
Tricks to Remember the Numbers
- Try linking the sounds to something silly: “chat” (7) sounds like talking!
- Create hand signals or silly gestures for each number to act them out.
- Draw each number with a picture: “baat” (8) looks like a snowman with two circles stacked!
