Say “You” in Two Ways! Respectful Speech in Hindi
In Hindi, how you say “you” changes depending on who you’re talking to. It’s a little different from English but that’s what makes it so special! Learning these small but powerful differences helps children understand culture and kindness through language.
Different Ways to Say “You” in Hindi
Hindi has three main ways to say “you”:
- Tu (तू) – informal, used with close friends or younger kids
- Tum (तुम) – casual and polite, often used with family or classmates
- Aap (आप) – very respectful, used for elders, teachers, or strangers
Each form shows a level of respect or closeness. Using the right one makes you sound thoughtful and polite.
Respect in Every Word
This respectful way of speaking is one reason Hindi is considered a warm and thoughtful language. Kids can learn when to use each version by role-playing different situations like speaking to a grandparent versus a best friend.
Activities to Practice “You” Forms
Role-Play Charades
Write different characters on cards (e.g., grandma, best friend, teacher). Kids act them out and others guess which form of “you” they should use.
Hindi You Match-Up
Match sample sentences to the correct “you” word—like “Aap kaise ho?” for a teacher or “Tu kahan ja raha hai?” for a sibling.
In Dinolingo’s Hindi course for ages 2–14, children naturally learn the forms of “you” through stories, animations, and interactive games. Cultural context is always part of the lesson—so kids not only learn the word but when to use it.
