Why Malay Has Different Words for Big and Little Siblings

In English, we just say “brother” or “sister.” But in Malay, it’s a bit more special there are different words for older and younger siblings! This gives kids an exciting look into how language reflects family respect and culture.

Meet the Family Words

Here are some of the first sibling-related words children learn in Malay:

  • Abang – older brother
  • Kakak – older sister
  • Adik lelaki – younger brother
  • Adik perempuan – younger sister

These words not only tell you who someone is, but also where they are in the family!
