The Legendary Beginning
Vietnamese history begins with a legend. Long ago, a dragon lord named Lạc Long Quân and a fairy named Âu Cơ fell in love and had 100 children. The oldest son, Hùng Vương, became the very first king of Vietnam. These 100 children were believed to be the ancestors of all Vietnamese people, which is why many say Vietnam was “born from the mountains and the sea.”
The Hùng Kings
The Hùng Dynasty ruled Vietnam for 18 generations. These early leaders built farming communities, formed early government systems, and passed down cultural traditions. But by the 3rd century B.C., the last Hùng King was overthrown by An Dương Vương, a ruler from a nearby kingdom.
Chinese Rule and Resistance
In 208 B.C., An Dương’s kingdom was conquered by the powerful Qin Dynasty of China. For over 1,000 years, parts of Vietnam were ruled by Chinese empires. During this time, Vietnam adopted many Chinese customs like writing, art, and Confucian ideas—but the Vietnamese people never forgot their identity. Over and over again, they resisted foreign control.
Gaining Independence
In 939 A.D., a Vietnamese hero named Ngô Quyền finally defeated the Chinese at the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. This historic win gave Vietnam its freedom and started the Ngô Dynasty. Even though many future dynasties followed and battles continued, Vietnam kept fighting to protect its land and culture.
The French Arrive
In the 1800s, another power—France—began taking control of parts of Vietnam. By 1861, the southern region called Cochin China was under French rule. The Vietnamese people began organizing movements to demand independence.
Ho Chi Minh and the Fight for Freedom
In 1930, a leader named Hồ Chí Minh founded the Indochinese Communist Party to fight against French control. After World War II, Vietnam declared its independence in the August Revolution of 1945.
The Vietnam War and Reunification
After the French were defeated at the Battle of Điện Biên Phủ in 1954, Vietnam was split into two parts: North and South. A civil war followed, with the United States getting involved. The war ended in 1973, and in 1975, South Vietnam surrendered. The country became one again—this time as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The southern capital city of Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in honor of the national leader.
