About England – facts, flag, population, music, food, and more

Geography and Nature
England is part of the island of Great Britain, which also includes Scotland and Wales. It takes up two-thirds of the island and is surrounded by the Irish Sea, North Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. Even though England isn’t very big, it has so much variety—from tall mountains and gentle hills to winding rivers, peaceful lakes, and mysterious marshes. Outside the cities, England is famously green, with lots of open countryside, and it’s usually pretty chilly!

Population
About 51 million people live in England. That may sound small compared to the 300 million people in the U.S., but England is a much smaller country. In fact, it’s one of the most densely populated countries in Europe! A big portion of the population lives in London, which makes the city feel lively, exciting—and very crowded!

Capital City and Important Cities
England is divided into nine regions and 48 counties. Its capital city, London, is in the London Region—makes sense, right? London is one of the most famous cities in the world and is full of iconic landmarks like Big Ben, the London Eye, and Buckingham Palace.

Flag
The flag of England is simple and striking: a white background with a bold red cross going across it both ways. This is known as Saint George’s Cross. Saint George was a Roman soldier who lived over 1,700 years ago and became a legendary figure in English history.

Food
One of the most classic English meals is “fish and chips”—fried fish with crispy French fries. Yum! English food often includes meat dishes like roast beef, lamb, chicken, and sausages. It may seem simple, but it’s full of flavor. And let’s not forget—tea is a big deal in England. Afternoon tea is a popular tradition, often served with biscuits or little cakes.

Music and Dance
England has given the world some of the most famous music ever. The Beatles, the most successful band in history, came from England! Many other rock, pop, and punk bands also started there. The anthem God Save the Queen is the official song of the United Kingdom and is sometimes used as England’s anthem, too.

Currency
England uses the pound sterling (£) as its currency. It’s one of the strongest currencies in the world! Even though England is part of Europe, it chose not to switch to the Euro and kept the pound instead.

Language
Yes, you guessed it—the official language of England is English! But here’s a fun fact: a very old language called Cornish is still spoken by some people and is officially recognized as a regional language.
