Where in the World Is Irish Still Spoken?
Irish (also called Gaelic) is one of the oldest living languages in Europe and yes, kids still speak it today! But where exactly can you hear it?
The Gaeltacht: Ireland’s Irish-Speaking Regions
In western parts of Ireland, there are special regions called the Gaeltacht. Here, Irish is spoken at home, at school, and in daily life. Places like County Galway, County Donegal, and County Kerry are full of beautiful Irish signs and native speakers.
Irish in Schools and Cities
Even outside the Gaeltacht, Irish is taught in every school across Ireland. Kids might speak English most of the day, but they still learn songs, poems, and fun expressions in Irish class. Some schools (called Gaelscoileanna) teach everything in Irish!
Around the World
You can also hear Irish in other countries like the USA, Canada, and Australia where Irish families and communities have kept their heritage alive. Irish dance schools, festivals, and language groups help the language grow far from home.
