New Letters, Same You: Spell Your Name in Russian
One of the most exciting things for kids learning Russian is seeing their own name written in the Cyrillic alphabet! It’s a great way to connect personally with the language and understand how Russian sounds work.
What Is the Cyrillic Alphabet?
Russian uses a different alphabet called Cyrillic. It has 33 letters, some of which look like English letters—but sound totally different! For example:
- В sounds like V
- Р sounds like R
- Н sounds like N
- Е sounds like Ye
Understanding these sounds helps kids spell their names phonetically in Russian.
Try It Out: Spell Your Name!
Pick your child’s name and say each letter out loud. Then, match each English sound to a Russian letter. For example:
- Emma → Эмма
- Leo → Лео
- Sara → Сара
Some names stay almost the same, while others change slightly to match Russian pronunciation.
Dinolingo helps kids aged 2–14 learn the Russian alphabet through interactive games, videos, and tracing activities so spelling their names becomes part of the fun!
Creative Activities to Try
Name Tag in Cyrillic
Make a colorful name tag using Cyrillic letters. Decorate it with stickers and hang it on your child’s bedroom door.
Alphabet Detective Game
Write out both alphabets (English and Russian) and see which letters match in sound or shape. Can your child find their name in both?
Spelling your name in Russian shows kids how language is both different and familiar—and always a little magical.
