All About Serbia: People, Places, and Beliefs
Serbia is a country full of history, culture, and friendly people. Located in Southeast and Central Europe, it’s a place where many traditions come together. Let’s explore where Serbia is, who lives there, and what they believe!
Where Is Serbia?
Serbia is surrounded by many countries. It shares borders with:
- Hungary to the north
- Romania and Bulgaria to the east
- North Macedonia to the south
- Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the west
- It also borders Albania
The capital city is Belgrade, one of the oldest cities in Europe. It’s full of museums, castles, parks, and exciting places to visit.
Who Lives in Serbia?
There are over 7 million people living in Serbia. Most of them—about 83%—are Serbs. But Serbia is also home to many different groups, such as:
- Hungarians
- Bosniaks
- Roma
- Slovaks
- And others from nearby countries
About 7% of the population are refugees, mostly from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who came to Serbia looking for safety and a new home.
What Do People Believe?
Most people in Serbia follow the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is one of the oldest branches of Christianity. There are also some people in Serbia who are Catholic or Muslim.
When Eastern Orthodox Christianity spread through the region many centuries ago, it deeply shaped Serbian culture. Beautiful monasteries and stone churches were built, many of which still stand today and can be visited. These buildings often have murals, domes, and special artwork showing stories from the Bible.
